🎯 Disc Image Studio — burn visible images onto real discs
Turn any picture into a visible disc surface and burn it onto a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray — the tool handles the physical-layer geometry for you.
Disc Image Studio is a Windows application that converts an image into disc-surface data conforming to the physical constraints of CD, DVD, and single-layer BD-R discs. After burning, the disc surface shows a visible pattern. Written in C# on .NET 10, developed by JiaFeiMiao-K-Cat, and licensed under GPL-3.0-or-later.
✨ Highlights
- CD-DA audio export: writes formatted WAV tracks with a companion CUE file, or RAW audio tracks, compatible with cdrecord and ImgBurn.
- Multi-format disc generation: supports CD (ISO9660/Joliet data discs or audio), DVD (pure image or mixed file+image), and single-layer Blu-ray (UDF 2.01, 25 GB).
- Companion files on disc: pick a folder to embed directly into the disc, choosing inner or outer band placement, saved with the project.
- DVD 3rd-order track pitch model: models track pitch as a function of radius for accurate geometry, shared by generation, preview, and calibration.
- Smart calibration: lifts measurable disc-surface precision from 10⁻⁶ to 10⁻¹⁴, correcting radial line curvature that constant-pitch models cannot fix.
- Grayscale dithering: a standalone tool converts source images into 0/255 binary PNGs, with side-by-side preview and lossless export.
- Instant streaming burn (experimental): CD, DVD, and BD-R burned as the image is generated, no full ISO saved first.
- Modular architecture: CD, DVD, and Blu-ray plug in through the
IOpticalDiscModuleinterface, sharing a unified command catalog and task contract.
💡 Why it matters
Most burning tools only write data — the disc looks blank. Disc Image Studio models the actual physical layer (pit patterns, NRZI encoding, ECC, track pitch) so the burned image is genuinely visible to the naked eye. That is a fundamentally different problem from just writing an ISO.
The calibration step is the quiet hero: by fitting a 3rd-order track-pitch model from a real disc photo, it fixes the radial distortion that ruins most DIY disc art, pushing precision far beyond what eyeballing can achieve. It fits hobbyists who want a real photo on a disc they will actually play or gift, and tinkerers who want to understand the physics underneath.
