📄 Tesseract OCR: The battle-tested open-source OCR engine
Decades-old OCR engine now powered by LSTM neural nets and Unicode support for 100+ languages.
Tesseract is an OCR engine providing libtesseract library and tesseract command-line program. Originally developed by HP (1985–1994) and later maintained by Google until 2017, it is now led by Stefan Weil with Zdenko Podobny as maintainer. Tesseract 4 introduced an LSTM-based neural network engine for line recognition while retaining Tesseract 3's legacy engine via --oem 0. It supports UTF-8, 100+ languages out of the box, and various image formats including PNG, JPEG, and TIFF.
✨ Highlights
- LSTM OCR Engine: Neural net-based line recognition added in Tesseract 4, improving accuracy over legacy pattern matching.
- Legacy Engine Support: Tesseract 3 character-pattern engine still available using
--oem 0mode. - Unicode (UTF-8) Support: Handles international text across scripts and encodings.
- 100+ Languages: Recognizes more than 100 languages out of the box with traineddata files.
- Multiple Image Formats: Supports PNG, JPEG, TIFF, and other common raster formats.
- Various Output Formats: Exports plain text, hOCR, PDF, TSV, ALTO, PAGE, and invisible-text-only PDF.
- Command-Line Interface: Simple CLI usage:
tesseract imagename outputbase [-l lang] [--oem mode] [--psm mode]. - C/C++ API: Use
libtesseractvia C or C++ interfaces to build custom OCR applications. - Trainable: Can be trained to recognize additional languages or custom fonts.
- No GUI Included: Focuses on core engine; third-party GUIs available separately.
💡 Why it matters
Tesseract stands out as a mature, actively maintained OCR solution with strong community backing and industrial use. Its dual-engine approach allows users to choose between modern LSTM accuracy and legacy compatibility, making it adaptable to diverse document types and workflows. With support for dozens of languages and flexible output formats, it integrates easily into larger systems requiring text extraction from scanned documents or images.
